Interactive Brokers Launches Election Outcome Trading with New Forecast Contracts

Interactive Brokers is set to introduce Forecast Contracts on U.S. election outcomes, allowing investors to trade their predictions on political events. The new offering, which begins trading today at 5:15 pm ET, expands the company's existing suite of contracts on economic data releases and climate indicators through the ForecastEx exchange.
These contracts aim to provide investors with a tool to manage portfolio risks associated with political uncertainty or to capitalize on their insights into electoral outcomes. The initial launch includes contracts on the 2024 U.S. Presidential election, Congressional majorities, and several key Senate races.
Thomas Peterffy, Founder and Chairman of Interactive Brokers, stated, "Forecast Contracts allow investors to act on the most crucial issues shaping our future. These contracts give traders a direct line to market sentiment on elections, helping them manage risk or express views on political events."
The contracts are priced between $0.02 and $0.99, reflecting the market's perceived probability of each outcome. For instance, a price of $0.35 indicates a 35% likelihood of the event occurring. Contracts settle at $1 for correct predictions and $0 for incorrect ones.
Investors can access these contracts through IBKR ForecastTrader using their existing Interactive Brokers login. The company is offering an incentive coupon, currently at 4.33% APY, paid monthly on the daily closing value of a position.
It's worth noting that these contracts are only available to eligible U.S. residents. Interactive Brokers plans to expand ForecastEx globally, covering a wider range of election events and other significant issues.
This move comes as financial institutions increasingly seek ways to help investors navigate politically volatile markets. The introduction of election-focused contracts positions Interactive Brokers as an innovator in this space, potentially attracting investors looking to hedge against or profit from political uncertainties.
The CFTC-regulated ForecastEx LLC, which operates the exchange for these contracts, is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Interactive Brokers.
