CME Group, the world's leading derivatives marketplace, has recorded a new single-day volume high across its energy complex, with 8.3 million contracts traded on 6 March 2026, surpassing the previous record of 7.9 million contracts set just three days earlier on 3 March 2026.
The milestone reflects heightened activity across energy markets as geopolitical uncertainty continues to drive demand for risk management tools. The record was broken within the same week it was set, with all five of the top-performing volume days for CME Group's refined products complex occurring during that period.
Peter Keavey, Global Head of Energy Products, CME Group
Peter Keavey, Global Head of Energy Products, CME Group said:
"As geopolitical shifts drive uncertainty throughout the global energy sector, market participants are turning to CME Group to manage their risk. In these volatile market conditions, clients continue to rely on our liquid markets and benchmark products to discover prices, hedge and adjust exposure within their portfolios."
Additional records were set on 6 March across several sub-categories within the energy complex. Energy options volume reached 1.43 million contracts, crude oil complex volume hit 5.73 million contracts, and Micro Crude Oil futures volume reached 748,729 contracts, each representing single-day highs.
CME Group's refined products segment, led by RBOB Gasoline and New York Harbor Ultra-low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) futures and options, also set a new single-day record of 1.25 million contracts on 3 March 2026. The five-day average volume for the complex reached 1.09 million contracts.
