This is a bit of a departure from my usual conversations with brokers and tech firms. In the latest edition of The Lowdown, I sat down with Angus Canvin to talk about Brexit, regulation and the future of UK financial markets.
I have known Angus for many years, and when he agreed to share his time and thoughts, it was too good an opportunity to pass up.
His career has taken him from the Bank of England to the FSA (now the FCA), the European Parliament, Goldman Sachs, Head of Brexit at the Investment Association, and UK Finance, where he was Director of International Affairs. That puts him in a rare position to speak openly about where the UK stands with the EU, and what the City needs to do next.
He speaks candidly about Brexit, the regulators’ mindset, competition from Paris, Frankfurt and Singapore, stablecoins and tokenisation, what the UK can learn from the US, and why he believes a successful City of London is in the national interest.
“The UK needs to be much more risk friendly.”
