When gold moves fast, like yesterday's $100+ move on the midterm results, two things can happen at once. Your hedges consume margin quickly, and your LP may raise margin requirements on the same symbol. Your margin level gets squeezed from both sides.
Then you rush to fund the account. Crypto settles in minutes, but some LPs still can't accept it. Wires take hours, or T+1 over the weekend. Either way, someone on your side has to sign off the transfer, and someone at the LP has to see it arrive and credit it.
If you hit stop-out first, your hedges get closed. Your clients' positions stay open on your platform. You now carry the whole book yourself, at the worst price of the week. What would you do, re-hedge after a $60-80 per ounce move against you? On 100 lots of net exposure, that's around $700k. One bad day can wipe out months of profit.
You didn't decide to B-book that flow. Your funding timeline did.
What I'd check before the next big move:
- Free margin at your LP, sized against your worst day this year
- Who on your side can sign a transfer at 11pm on a Friday
- Whether your LP can extend short-term credit while your funds are on the way
- Whether your stop-out level can be lowered for your account
Most risk setups stress-test the price. Do you think stress-testing the transfer makes sense too?
