XAUUSD Support and Resistance: How to Mark Gold Levels on the Weekly Chart?

      Post illustration

Where should you start when marking gold support and resistance? Begin with the weekly chart.

Learning how to mark gold levels on the weekly chart helps you identify major turning points before studying smaller price movements.

In our previous guide to XAUUSD support and resistance, we introduced the process. This article focuses on selecting and drawing the weekly zones.

      Key Takeaways

      1. Identify obvious weekly swing highs and lows.
      2. Use candle bodies and wicks to define price zones.
      3. Prioritize levels relevant to the current market structure.
      4. Treat weekly levels as areas to monitor, not automatic entries.

      1. Open the XAUUSD Weekly Chart

Select the 1W timeframe, where each candle represents one trading week.

Zoom out until you can see the major advances, declines, and consolidation areas. Recognizing these movements helps you identify market trends using price action.

Start with completed candles; the current weekly candle can change before the week ends.

Ask: Where did gold clearly change direction?

      2. Identify XAUUSD Major Market Structure

Gold’s weekly market structure helps establish the trend:

      1. Bullish: Higher Highs (HH) and Higher Lows (HL).
      2. Bearish: Lower Highs (LH) and Lower Lows (LL).

Use higher lows to identify potential support and lower highs to locate potential resistance. Combining market structure with support and resistance helps connect these turning points with meaningful weekly zones.

      3. Draw Zones Around the Reactions

Gold does not always react at the exact same price. When identifying support and resistance levels, a practical approach is to draw a rectangle around a cluster of weekly reactions.

Use nearby candle bodies to identify the core area and relevant wick extremes to define its outer boundary.

Keep the zone narrow enough to be useful, but wide enough to represent the visible reactions. Avoid stretching it simply to include every candle.

      4. Check the History Behind Each Zone

      Look left and ask:

      1. Did price previously turn sharply from this area?
      2. Did separate reactions occur around similar prices?
      3. Was this the boundary of a clear consolidation?
      4. Has the level already been broken?

Studying price action at key levels helps you assess these reactions. Previous reactions explain why a zone deserves attention, but they do not prove it will hold again.

Broken resistance may later act as support, and broken support may become resistance.

      5. Label the Zone and Wait for a Retest

Label each area clearly, such as Weekly Support, Weekly Resistance, or Previous Range High.

Then observe how price behaves when it returns. Candlestick confirmation, a close beyond the zone, or a false breakout can help you reassess the level.

A move through a zone during the week is different from a completed weekly close beyond it. Neither guarantees the next move.

Example: Marking a Weekly Resistance Level

Imagine several completed weekly candles peak within a similar price area before gold declines.

Draw a zone around those peaks and their nearby body edges. Extend it to the right so you can monitor a future return.

If gold later closes above that area, watch whether a subsequent retest holds it as support. This illustrates the break-and-retest price action pattern.

This is a hypothetical example, not a current trade signal.

      Weekly Gold Levels Checklist

Before moving to the daily chart, confirm:

      1. Major swing highs and lows are marked.
      2. Zone boundaries follow visible candle reactions.
      3. Overlapping or unnecessary zones are removed.
      4. Completed weekly candles support the analysis.
      5. Each level has a clear reason for being on the chart.

With XAUUSD weekly support and resistance marked, the next step is to examine the daily chart for more detail while keeping the weekly zones as your reference.

      Final Thoughts

Marking XAUUSD weekly support and resistance starts with clear market structure and meaningful price reactions. Identify the major zones, keep your chart simple, and wait for confirmation - past reactions do not guarantee future support or resistance.
