Reversal Chart Patterns: The Complete Guide to Spotting Bullish and Bearish Trend Reversal Pattern in Trading

      Post illustration

One of the biggest challenges in trading is spotting when a trend is about to reverse. While no pattern is 100% accurate, reversal chart patterns can help you identify high-probability trade opportunities. When combined with market structure, support and resistance, and proper risk management, they become a powerful tool for trading forex, stocks, commodities, cryptocurrencies, and indices.

      Goal of this lesson

To help you understand how reversal chart patterns work, identify the most reliable bullish and bearish reversal patterns, and learn how to confirm them before entering a trade.

By the end of this lesson, you should be able to:

      1. Define what a reversal chart pattern is.
      2. Differentiate between bullish and bearish reversal patterns.
      3. Identify the six major reversal chart patterns.
      4. Recognize the key confirmations that validate a reversal pattern.
      5. Explain why confirmation is essential before entering a trade.
      6. Apply reversal patterns with market structure, support and resistance, breakout, retest, and the 50 EMA to find higher-probability trade setups.

      What are reversal chart patterns?

A reversal chart pattern is a price formation that signals a potential change in trend direction.

      1. Bullish reversal: Price changes from a downtrend to an uptrend.
      2. Bearish reversal: Price changes from an uptrend to a downtrend.

These patterns become more reliable when they form at major support or resistance levels and are confirmed by a breakout rather than traded before completion.

What are the most reliable reversal chart patterns that you need in trading?

1a | Head and shoulders pattern (Bearish)

      Post illustration

Basic Structure of a Head and Shoulders Pattern

The Head and shoulders is a bearish reversal pattern that signals buyers are losing momentum and sellers are beginning to take control.

In a real chart, it looks like this:

      Key confirmation:

      1. Three peaks are formed.
      2. The middle peak (the head) is the highest.
      3. The two outer peaks (the shoulders) are lower and roughly equal in height.
      4. Price breaks and closes below the neckline, confirming the bearish reversal.

      Note:

Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results.

1b | Inverse head and shoulders pattern (Bullish)

      Post illustration

Basic Structure of a Inverse Head and Shoulders Pattern

The Inverse head and shoulders is the opposite of the Head and Shoulders pattern. It signals that sellers are losing momentum and buyers are beginning to take control.

In a real chart, it looks like this:

      Key confirmation:

      1. Three lows are formed.
      2. The middle low (the head) is the deepest.
      3. The two outer lows (the shoulders) are higher and roughly equal in depth.
      4. Price breaks and closes above the neckline, confirming the bullish reversal.

      Note:

Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results.

2a | Double top pattern (Bearish)

      Post illustration

Basic Structure of a Double Top Pattern

The Double top is a bearish reversal pattern that forms after an uptrend. It shows that buyers failed twice to break above, allowing sellers to take control.

In a real chart, it looks like this:

      Key confirmation:

      1. Two highs form at a similar level.
      2. Price breaks and closes below the neckline.
      3. The breakout confirms a bearish trend reversal.

      Note:

2b | Double bottom pattern (Bullish)

      Real-life analogy on reversal patterns

      Post illustration

      Consider a car driving uphill.

As it goes up the car begins to slow down. Eventually it gets to the top of the hill, slows down, and starts rolling back down. The slowdown looks like a pattern of reversal – it hints that the direction may change. But the car has not really reversed until it starts to go downhill.

      Trading is the same!

A reversal pattern shows that the current trend is losing momentum, but you want to wait for the price to actually change direction before getting into a trade.

      Take note:

A reversal pattern is like a car slowing at the top of a hill, it suggests a turn, but confirmation comes when it starts moving in the opposite direction.

Why a reversal patterns alone isn't enough?

A reversal pattern doesn’t mean the trend is going to reverse. It just means a reversal could happen. This is the reason experienced traders wait for exact confirmation before executing a trade from a reversal pattern.

      Experienced traders look for:

      1. Market Structure: A break of the previous high or low.
      2. Support & Resistance: The pattern forms at a key price level.
      3. Breakout: Price breaks and closes beyond the neckline.
      4. Retest: Price retests the breakout level before continuing.
      5. 50 EMA: Confirms the new trend direction.

The more confirmations you have, the higher the probability of a successful trade.

      Final thoughts

      Post illustration

Reversal chart patterns can help traders to identify potential trend reversals but they are not standalone trading signals. The highest probability setups come when a confirmed reversal pattern matches up with market structure, key support and resistance levels and disciplined risk management.

      Always remember:

Wait for confirmation before entering a trade, patterns predict possibilities, not certainties.

      Your next step is:
